The Mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports, training, and athletic competition for children & adults with intellectual & physical disabilities.
Through its year-round sports, Special Olympics Forsyth County provides opportunities for children and adults with developmental disabilities to gain the necessary skills to become active members of the community by promoting and encouraging healthy living, community involvement, independence and purposeful living and employment.
Special Olympics Forsyth offers a variety of sports options as well as levels within these sports to meet the developmental and physical skill needs of each athlete. In addition, Special Olympics Forsyth prides itself on the coaches, unified partners, board and volunteers who devote their time and energy to ensure each Athlete experiences the many benefits of team and individual sports. Special Olympics Forsyth County reports up through Special Olympics Georgia (SOGA).
Here’s a quick highlight of Special Olympics Forsyth:
- Local Games: Students who attend Forsyth County Schools can attend the smaller non-competitive events during the school day and arranged by the Adapted PE Teachers. There are 2 scheduled local games per grade level (K-2 (one only), 3rd – 5th, 6th – 8th and high school).
- State Games: Athlete’s who choose to “play competitive” can participate in sports at the state level. Practices are held 8-10 weeks prior to the State Games and are mandatory. There are currently 3 seasons of sport options with SOGA. Winter, Summer, & Fall Games and The Horse Show
- Sports: over 16 sporting competitive options – individual and team play
- Coaches: all Coaches volunteer their time, are screened, and certified through SOGA and must renew every (3) years. We have over 50 certified coaches and Unified Partners.
- Athletes: we currently serve over 800 athletes in the Local Games and 150+ in the State Games. Over half of our State Games Athletes are over the age of 21.
- Funding: Special Olympics Forsyth replies on fund-raising and donations to support the operational costs for the program. We do not receive funding from SOGA. Our largest fundraiser is our Annual Raffle Ticket Sales. We expect each Athlete to help sell raffle tickets and the drawing takes place at the Annual Battle of the Bats in September! Smaller fund-raisers are held throughout the year and we rely on our many generous annual corporate sponsors.
- Other events: Battle of the Bats Softball Invitational which is held at Central Park in September
- Recognitions – We have received numerous recognitions for our Athletes, Coaches and Volunteers including Local Coordinator of the Year, Athletes of the Year, Coach of the Year, Volunteer of the Year. Athletes and Coaches were also selected to participate in Special Olympics USA Games and World Games.
- Management Team: All are Volunteer positions.
