Community Outreach

Forsyth County Schools believes in the importance of community partnerships and the impact it can have on the graduation outcomes of their students as well as the positive impact partnerships have on the community as a whole.  Special Olympics is considered one of these impactful partnerships because it instills healthy living habits and builds character, self-confidence, perseverance, and life-long friendships to those who participate.  To introduce Special Olympics to their students, FCS’s Adapted PE teachers provide lessons that incorporate skills and games found within the sports of Special Olympics. They then offer small local introductory games to all eligible students using the same skills and sports practiced throughout the school year to build student and family awareness and encourage students to consider participating and competing with Special Olympics Forsyth as an extra-curricular sport.  In addition, Special Olympics is a sport that keeps individuals active and socializing throughout their adult years.  Therefore, it is often regularly discussed in the students’  IEP meetings as part of the transition planning and preparation for adult living.  For more information please contact Susan Darlington, Transition Coordinator, Forsyth County Schools, 770-887-2461 ext. 310265 or SDarlington@forsyth.k12.ga.us
